Well, it had to happen — Palm just couldn’t survive (for long) as an independent company. Palm has been acquired by HP for US$1.2 billion. Palm as a company has gone through so many changes over the years, with acquisitions and mergers and demergers and name changes. In an ironic twist, the HP acquisition was announced by none other than Todd Bradley, a former Palm CEO himself.

Palm does have a solid operating system – webOS – but it never did have the resources (financial and distribution) to tackle the smartphone giants Apple, Blackberry and Nokia/Symbian.

It’s an interesting bet that HP has made. HP has always been a Microsoft supporter when it comes to smartphones and mobile devices. With webOS in their hands, HP would certainly have to make major changes to their lineup, including their upcoming Slate tablets.

Perhaps this is HP’s way of getting back at Apple for the HP iPod failure?
